cheap material or wood for work bench top?

just looking for the cheapest yet suitable wood to lay on top of an existing workbench. If i had my preference, id cover it with a type of sheet metal, but im assuming that would be more expensive? So id just like to know the cheapest way to put a new top on the bench, preferable something i could stain and use polyurethane to make it look somewhat decent, but thats not a must. obviously i dont want something thats going to compl;etly chip apart within a few weeks of use, but this is only for a temporary work space until i move into a new house.

We use MDF and replace it once every few years, give or take.
If you spend tons of time trying to baby your work bench you are wasting time that could be better spent on completing a project.
It’s not a piano, it’s a work bench.
If it’s temporary, definitely use MDF or particle board.
Some guys have ultra nice benches, but they are typically the leather apron types… more interested in looking like a carpenter than actually being one.
The best woodworkers I’ve ever known don’t give a crap about the appearances of their benches. They just need to them be strong and level.
Function before fashion is a basic fundamental of productivity.
