Who has cheap furniture?

I need a leather sectional or couch set & I have been checking Craig;s List for months to no avail. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

I repair furniture and upholstery for several retailers in the Chicagoland area. I can tell you from first hand experience that there are SEVERAL issues with leather and you may want to consider fabric instead. The main issue with leather is that across the board, from low-end (Ashley and so forth) to high end (Arhaus furniture, Ethan Allen, etc) is color loss. I’ve seen several sets that start to lose color within 6 months to a year, and the really sad part is that most extended warranties DO NOT cover color loss (they say that this is normal usage, which is bull since the color on leather used to last for 20 years). If they do, then you have to worry about the tech that is coming out to re-color the leather, often these techs will just spray paint the leather with a color that comes close, and within 2-3 weeks all that color starts to flake and peel away. The reason they do this is because many repair companies will only guarantee the repair for 30 days!

Worse yet is that most of the lower end leather that you will get is either:

Bicast leather (also known as bycast leather, split leather or PU leather) is a split leather with a layer of polyurethane applied to the surface and then embossed. Bycast was originally made for the shoe industry and recently was adopted by the furniture industry. The resulting product is cheaper than top grain leather and has an artificially consistent texture and is easier to clean and maintain. With constant use the polyurethane layer will crack and split free of its backing.

Bonded leather , or “reconstituted Leather”, is not really a true leather but a man-made material. Some types of bonded leather are composed of 90% to 100% leather fibers (often scrap from leather tanneries or leather workshops) bonded together with latex binders to create a look and feel similar to that of ‘true’ leather at a fraction of the cost. This bonded leather is not as durable as other leathers, and is recommended for use only if the product will be used infrequently.

These types of leather tend to split and tear easily. Sometimes the leather looks fine for awhile and then developes ‘dimples’, which when you press down upon the ‘dimples’ they will split and the leather will tear.

Any sales person will tell you that they haven’t heard of any of these problems and so forth because they want to sell you furniture that is more expensive and thus more commission for them. But who do you want to believe; the sales person who has monetary gain to think about or a tech that has seen these issues firsthand? Good luck with your decision!
