How tall does my ladder need to be?

How tall a ladder (A-frame ladder) do I need to paint a 16 foot ceiling? Will a 12 foot ladder do it, or should I get a 14 foot?

According to OSHA rules you are not supposed to stand on the two top rungs of a step ladder. A 12 foot ladder gives a maximum safe standing height of 10 feet. Unless you are really short you should be able to comfortably reach a 6 feet higher than where you are standing. You should only need the ladder to cut in around the edges. An extension pole for the roller will be easier than a ladder for the rest of the ceiling.
