Why do I have to install a door like that?

I’m buying a ’15 lite’ door for between my kitchen and entry hall. I’m putting it in ’cause I want to keep most of the heat in the kitchen (the baby, too!). I’ve seen web sites that make installing a door seem really difficult. They include tearing out the frame that’s already there and I want to know why I cant just buy hinges and some strips of wood to stop the door. The doorway I’m using is finished and it’s smooth. There’s no door frame there, it’s just basicly a finished rectangular opening in the wall. The dimensions for the finished door match the opening in the wall. I did the math and the door will fit fine.

Sounds like you can do exactly what you propose. Those websites are trying to cover the situations that most people encounter when installing a door, i.e.- the opening is not the proper size, or completely square. Prehung doors (the kind that come with the frame attached) are generally easier to get plumb and square when installing in a roughed-out opening, which is why they are more commonly used.
But, if an unframed door will work for you, I say go for it.
