What do I have to do to use logs from my woods as supports instead of cut lumber?

We are about to build a home and I am wanting a rustic look. We have a lot of timber (various type – oak, hedge, Sycamore, cedar) on our ranch and want to use the tree trunks as upright supports for the stairs, porch, in the great room, etc. What do we have to do to be able to use them? House won’t even be started for at least 6 months.

Your going to want to cut it down and shave the bark off. Its going to need to cure out of the weather so if you have an old barn or somewhere to stack it in a dry environment, do that. Make sure to lay 4×4′s between each row to keep them separated.
