What is the best mattress to use to prevent back ache?

I have recently moved in with a friend and the mattress I’ve been sleeping on is foam. It was originally comfortable, but now after several weeks I have been waking up with lower back pain. This resolves quite quickly, but I don’t want it to get worse. I have also noticed that it is very indented where I have slept. This can’t be good when I change positions during the night can it? I am also a very restless sleeper. What do you suggest in regards to this or an appropriate mattress? I don’t want anyone trying to sell me any fancy mattresses as I can’t afford this, just want advice! Also, I am only in my late 20′s and a slightly overweight – but not obese. Thanks in advance!!

I had a very sore back and made the mistake of buying a memory foam. Sleeping on foam is terrible. It indents too much and because it forms to your body, it is much hotter in the summer to sleep on. I ended up giving it away and bought a firm mattress. Sleeping on a brand new firm matress is not the most comfortable, so what I did was get an old sleeping bag and spread it out on top of the mattress and put a flat sheet over that. The sleeping bag provided cushion for my pressure points and I had firm support underneath for my back. You can of course buy a mattress with a build in “pad” on top, and that would probably be the best if you can afford it.
