Can i weld storage boxes right into my truck bed?

I have an 1986 ford F250 extended cab, long box, i would rather just weld or install some storage boxes right into my long box frame, is that possible? without having to buy a whole new box with compartments built right into it? or can i custom my own box, meaning build it myself how i want it? would that be legal or illegal? thanks for your input!

I guess if you know your metallurgy, you can weld right onto a truck frame. There is a grain to the metal of a vehicle frame though, and I was told if you don’t know what you’re doing, you can weaken it by welding on it. I took 2 qtrs. of welding and remember well the instructor telling people not to. I think he said that because he knew once some of us thought we could weld, we’d do something like that and do more damage than good. I would suggest drilling holes and bolting it down.
