How old is my antique Joseph Gramer piano ?

Antique piano, Joseph Gramer, serial #1636, Trying to restore, need help with finding info. Plate inside says Joseph Gramer Boston 1636 on the inside right side, and has the number 96 on the left. This is an upright piano and is either cherry or mahogany in finish.

According to my trusty Pierce catalog, that piano was built in 1901. They built their last piano in 1913, serial number 7500.

Pierce offers no other information.

You want to restore it? To what degree?

I would not put much money into it — you will eventually put more into it than it would cost to invest in a new instrument.

Restringing can cost $3 to $5000
New hammers and dampers –at least that much.
Refinishing — again as much.
And if you need a new soundboard, pinblock, or bridge, forget about it.
That is major work and major money — in 5 figures.

Yet that piano in the best condition would at best bring you nor more than $500 — or maybe $1000 if you find a sucker for “old uprights”.

Believe me, they are much more trouble than they are worth.
