How Should I Go About Starting A WinterGuard?
Okay, so, my friend and I are interested in starting a WinterGuard at my highschool. We’re rather responsible and most adults trust us if no one else and I know our band director does. Well, how should we go about asking her to start one? She is usually very hesitant about things such as this. Should we ask her to let us just get the word out and see how many actually show up at the try outs or what?
Starting a winter guard can be a really great benefit to your overall winter program. After all, musicians have the opportunity for year-round training through their band classes. Most color guard students do not. Adding a winter guard to your program puts the color guard on an equal footing with the musicians in terms of year-round training. It can help to greatly improve the performance of the fall team.
But starting and running a winter guard can be a great deal of work and many band directors are too busy with their current schedules to add one more thing to their plate. One idea, if you don’t have a coach, would be to find an adult who is willing to be the team sponsor and help with supervision and administrative tasks. But talk to your band director about this first. Go into your meeting with your band director having thought of a list of challenges to having a winter guard program and the ways you have brainstormed to meet those challenges. Some challenges might include: funding, adult supervision, rehearsal space, travel accommodations (does the school system provide buses), rehearsal schedule, equipment/uniforms, etc. Go into the meeting with a well-thought out plan.
At the Color Guard Educators website (www.colorguardeducators.com) there is an article with links to resources for people who are starting their first winter guard. This would be a great place to start if your band director agrees to jump in!
