When picking out home accents, there are a few general rules to follow:

*Keep your pieces limited to 3 per shelf depending on the size of your bookcases. The times when this rule would not apply is when you have chosen a larger piece, say an 8×10 picture frame that lays horizontal. Maybe only one other small piece on the shelf. You never want to hide the reason you bought the shelves which are the books. You still need to be able to access them.

*Not everything has to match, but it should still go together. For example, if you have an ornate cast iron decorative candle holder you bought previously, instead of choosing a small crystal base for tapered candles, opt for the maroon candle holder with the thick quilted base.

*Not every wall must have furniture and wall art. If you tried to cover every bit of wall space, you would have a cramped room that would be hard to enjoy. When there is so much everywhere, your eye has a hard time concentrating on certain pieces. For example, if you bought an oil painting that you were very proud of, you wouldn’t want to hide it away in a corner among mirrors and plants. Leave your space open and inviting.

*You can make different styles work together. If you love flowers and flower prints and flower pictures and you only have big wooden furniture and a more modern style from your previous home but you can only afford a few pieces of wall art or home accents at a time or you don’t want to get crazy with the floral print, buy a few that you really like. In most cases, you can combine different styles. It may be slightly more difficult, but the end result can be very charming.

We have talked about how Wall art can complete your home and help you share your personality throughout your home, but don’t forget the small details that give you something to talk about too. There is almost always a story behind interesting trinkets and purchases from vacations or simply who you were with when you bought it. Display them so you can share your story with your friends and family. Much can be said for home accents in your home when it comes to filling a room with comfort.
